Default N scale scratch-building: Project 3: Oil Storage Tanks

Well, my layout plan is ever changing! I decided to go for a harbor for quite some time, started with a prototype and the design evolved quite a bit over time. I hope I am mostly at a stable position now to take rest of my scratchbuilding projects forward (but you never know). To be on the safer side, I started with the oil storage tanks, since no matter what layout I build they will be there (just because I need a destination for my oil tanker Sirius!)

I looked around for some days for a proper material to start, and guess the lesson I learned! Don't throw anything away, not even the hollow cardboard drum of a toilet paper roll!

Well, first I cut two of them in half, to make a total of 4 tanks (I will make two bigger tanks later as well)

sealed one side of each by a properly cut thick cardboard.

Now in the following picture, notice the cut on the drum-possibly made during manufacturing. This will be my reference to the staircase.

After installing the staircase. Individual small card strips glued to the tank and then connected by a long, thin strip on the outer side-total 45 steps...

done on two of the tanks-decided to go for a different arrangement for the rest of the tanks. This process is indeed monotonous and tougher...

My wife applied the first coat of paint and I installed the railings...

After installing the pipe... some excellent weathering by my dear wife!

There will be another tank exactly same as this one... and the rest will be a little different... progress will follow...

Nice work kaustav, some models should be as cheaply made as that.

Added one more and preparation is on for another two...

The curved staircase was a tough thing to do, so I decided to go for a common, straight staircase for the other two tanks which will be connected with each other through a platform that you can see in the picture!!!

Hi JackBlack,

The staircase is purely made from thin cardboard. I actually cut the small steps and glue it to the frame. The railings are ordinary electric wire...
