Default N scale scratch-building: Project 2: Small Cargo Ship

Well it's been some time since my last post and unfortunately my railroad project has been stalled again due to some unfortunate circumstances... AGAIN...

As usual, since I could not start with the railroad, i tried to keep myself busy by building the necessary components of the layout. My previous project was an old oil tanker and this time it's a small cargo ship for my planned river port.

Unlike last time, I decided to follow a prototype as strictly as possible, and I have picked this one:

http://www.maritimesales.com/TSS11.htm

But you will see that I customized the model as per my liking and requirement-my idea is to model a loading/unloading scene with both the ships, so for this one I will have to show the hatch open, derrick functioning, people busy loading goods...

Started with the basic structural components... nothing much to explain... The big hole at the back of the hull is for light access... I have learned the hard way never to fix a light in any complex scratch-built product... I did that for the oil tanker, and now the LED is bust and I don't know how to replace that...

Anyway... here are some quick progress shots...

The hatch...

After adding the engine rooms/cabins and the bridge...

"outsourced" job of painting... nicely done by my dear wife... AS ALWAYS...

The Coaming...

Hatch Boards...

Showing the removable beam in place... but since I will be modeling a loading scene with this ship, that beam will be lying somewhere on the deck...

After painting the hatch boards... notice that the boards of the open hatch and the removable beam lying on the deck...

Yesterday night I was just trying to get an idea of the height of the main mast, the foremast and the derrick... a rough representation... IS THIS TOO TALL FOR THE SHIP? What you guys think????????

hi kaustav, the ship is coming on great. i think the mast looks in proportion to the scale as i look at the pics of the real one. good job.

Yesterday we sat through the mast and derrick building session and by 4 o'clock in the morning... we kind of finished it! Hours at a stretch... and here is the result...

You can see the Oil Tanker Sirius in the background...
