Default N scale scratch-building: Project 1: Oil Tanker - Sirius

I am going to start building an N scale shelf layout next year. This will be a medium size river port serving the nearby industries. The plan and details about the layout will follow in a different thread as I start building it.

Now port needs ships and cranes along with a lot of industrial buildings. I searched on the internet for quite some time for ready-made things and paper models, but nothing really worked out for me-either cost was a burden or there were some or the other problems. So I decided to build all of them by myself!

I started with a small, 50m long Oil Tanker. I studied over the internet and has taken elements from a lot of prototypes and models. Work is done mostly with cardboard and other handy material. I am posting the progress so far:

First the skeleton of the ship:

Then I have made the decks and the body of the ship:

After the first coat of paint (courtesy my dear wife):

Added the cabins and started building the bridge:

At this point I decided to add a light in the bridge, so I decided to add some detailing. You can clearly see my chief engineer inspecting the progress and doing the quality check to the ship wheel (which is made of soldering wire and small, thin strip of paper)!. Trust me, these things are so tiny... and so delicate, that sometimes it feels that I really need help from the lilliputs!

I added the staircase to the cabin. I myself like that!

After paint work and some more detailing:

Now I installed the light in the Bridge and tried to get some snaps (look closely and you can see the captain!):

Recently I added the mast, the ladder and the railings:

Will update as I go on adding things for this model. Please let me know your thoughts and guidance.

By the way modeling and detailing in N-scale... IS TOUGH...

I agree, definately sea worthy (for an N-scale Sea, i dont think it could hand 50ft waves ), Very good build

Many thanks to all for such great encouragements. That's a real booster!

As for the updates, my wife did a great job with the paint brush...

The previous smokestack (funnel) of the ship was actually oversized. So here is a new funnel along with other detailing:

Some additional shots:
