Default Livesteam-Shay in On30 -> It's possible

Hello On30-friends,

well it seems to be right, that my brain is going cracy from time to time...
But sometimes, there are also some nice ideas...

I've started a design for an On30 2-truck Shay, running with livesteam.
Here are some first 3D-models, showing the frame, boiler and steam-engine.
(Click thumbs too enlarge)

This will be the steam-engine. 2 cylinders, 5mm bore, stroke 6mm each. They are constructed as double-action oscillating (?) cylinders. On the rearside is the steamvalve for changing direction and speed.

The boiler will be build out of copper-pipes. It's designed as T-boiler, butt will work like an L-boiler. The lower part will hold the burner. I'll go to use an alcohol-burner or better, a burner for fuel paste (?). That's not liquid and your layout could live a bit longer after a derailment . Inside the boiler, I'll add one smoke-pipe from firebox to smokebox.

It will take some time, until I'll have enoug time, to start this project. I'll also spend much more time in construction and making drawings and 3D-models, before starting.

What do you think about that. Are you interested in this project and do you want to see more about it?

I'm working with Gmax for 3D-models and AutoCAD for other drawings.

-> edited : I've found some minutes, to add some more parts to my virtuel model. I'll use my Bachmann-Shay for dimensions. It will get the look of well known Lima cn/122 "Mich-Cal #2" after conversion to oilburner.

<- end of edit.

Interesting. What kind of run times do you anticipate?

@Dwight : nearly endless

I've created the boiler-design in my head and will bring it to virtuel paper tonight...

The boiler will have a water-sight-glass inside the cab and a water-feed valve, also placed inside the cab or rear fueltank. So you can check the water-stand all the time and feed new water if necessary, using a spray bottle like G-scale-steamers.

The lower part of the T-boiler will hold the burner, that can be removed to the right-side and replaced by a secound one, when the fuel is empty.

A safety-valve should be of course.

Maybe, you can run this loco for an hour or even more. I hobe I can report about this one day (maybe this year????? )

The room inside the fuel/water-tank will be used, to place reciever, batteries and a servo, to radio-control the loco on the layout.

That's what is in my brain.... Let's get it out and put them to the tracks .

I run 1:20.3 live steam and I'm familiar with the bottle method. hehehe I was just curious how much time you might get on one boiler full of water considering the requisite small size.

BTW, would you happen to be the same Gerd who posts on MLS sometimes?

Hi,

@Dwight : Yes that's me on MLS. My user there is too old, because "Waldbahner" (that means "logging railroader") is my best known modelrailroader-nickname ;-)

@Jim : Hmm... I'm sorry. But that's not planned :-( But I can give you some drawings and tipps, to make your own one ;-)
I'll try to create a complete building "how-to" and publish that to my website.
Maybe, I'll build two of them, to sell one later to get some money for the next project... but I'm not sure.

Nice project!

Hmm, considered DCC instead of R/C, saves the battery space for other things like an axle driven water pump and 'live' water tank?
