Default DCC transformer Smoking

I ask the following question with great reluctance. I fear that I have made some major mistakes and it has caused me to burn up my DCC transformer. I finished a new track layout and used my DCC transformer for about an hour total. (2 trains now but with the potential for 3). All of the sudden my transformer starting smoking and shut itself off. I shut everything down and tried to start it again 15 minutes later. The power indicator came on and the transformer started smoking again... then shut down. Wiring problem or what? I did try my DC transformer and it seems to work ok. Any suggestions?
