I'll pitch in with red, Rick.
Takes me back. I made the Peco Douglas kit in 009 (now sold on since I moved up a scale) |

That's great! How did you paint it? I noticed originally it was dark green, but when they started using it as Duncan for the kids they painted it red as it was in the Railway Series books. (Amber was done for the TV series)

I appreciate the Chicago-style voting I'm kind of thinking that I may change out the rods - see how it looks, then paint it red later if I feel the need. As you can tell from the photos the frame is pretty grungy - from life as a mining railway Porter. I can put a new frame and rods in and start fresh.

Thanks Nathan - duly noted.
I've put this project aside for a bit as I have a chance to work on the layout. But I will be back soon. EDIT: A storm came through and limited the woodworking I could do on the layout (I don't have an indoor workshop). So I disassembled the other donor locomotive. The reason it wasn't running - the screw holding the motor down was missing and the previous owner had tried to fix it with glue (and failed) - so the worm gear wasn't contacting the axle gear. I replaced the screw AND the motor from the first donor locomotive (the second motor had glue all over it), lubricated all the appropriate points and it runs pretty well! Nice shiny silver rods - which I will evaluate after the rest of Duncan is painted and determine if they should be red or not. A bonus from the new donor was the old deck plate. It's too narrow (coming from an N scale locomotive) but I can use it as a starting point for tracing the new deck plate. I also become displeased with the sand dome cover (too rounded) so I took a file to it and flattened it off - looks much better. I bought some Tamiya paints from the hobby shop on the recommendation of the owner. Found some colors that were close. I'm not much for mixing colors since I think it would be impossible (for me) to replicate for touch ups.

They should have a Duncan loco in the Hornby "Thomas the tank" series.

No - as far as I know, Hornby only carries the standard gauge equipment in their Thomas range. Duncan is a narrow gauge locomotive.
