First job on Saturday was to cut out the access panel, this will be where all contols, points motors etc will be placed.

Second job was to fit walls to the riser ramps.

These jobs were done after I rotated the layout so I could work on the backside and when I started to fit the walls, I found the wall around back left corner was actualy over the track below, so with some diligent repostitioning and a couple of pieces of track, see result below.

That's a lot of tracks in such a small place... looks like it will be great fun, all right!

Its looking good so far. I am a bit worried though, those points in the last shot look awfully close together. Have you checked if two trains going in opposite directions will clear each other?

I thought that looked a bit tight. But at least it hasn't been ballasted yet

Fixed the track which was to close, then ventured into fitting the points motors.
I am using brass tube and piano wire to allow the point motor to be remote.

A couple of the points are at raised hieghts around the track so I had to build some small risers.

Slow going but by taking my time i will get better results with the points action

more later

Well all but one points motor fitted

Now will begin the hardest bit - the wiring (and I am an electrician)
It will be DCC and even after wandering through this forum and others, I am still unsure how to go as this is my first DCC layout.

I have read through this forum and I find most advocating Digitrax systems.
I have seen in "Conors Run" his use of programmed points control all be it with manual option and this apeals to me

For the first time DCC I would like any opinions to help me decide

Help

In terms of programmed routes and DCC point controllers, the biggest selection of products are designed for the Digitrax system because the of the 'Loconet' bus which allows for alot more communication between different bits of the system (points, feedback, control, etc. are all integrated). Though NCE also offers some of this functionality though their 'Mini-Panel' aswell.

As for the train control part of the system, most of the major manufacturers offer systems which are very similar in quality and performace, so in that respect its a case of chosing which one you like the feel of more than anything.

If you do decide you like the controller from a manufacturer other than digitrax, it is possible to impliment Loconet without a digitrax controller.

We have bought a new house and will be moving within the next couple of months.

My new shed is 5.5m x 15m benched down one side and even has its own toilet.
I have to keep focused on the move before designing a layout to fit down the back of the shed.

I have started to pack my 2 layouts to give "she who is obeyed" more room to pack

Will advise of any changes to layouts asap
