I am trying to model a Montana mining operation, but my research now shows that the Silver Ore operation ended in the 1920's, but the mine operated until mid-1950 mining Zinc and Lead.
Was zinc and lead moved in the same type "ore cars" as was used for Iron Ore, and Taconite ? Or did they use regular hoppers ? Thanks for any info you can give.... Bob  |

Bob, the big thing to look for is where the ore was processed. If it was at the mine site then it would probably be shipped out bagged in boxcars. If the ore was concentrated then it might also still be shipped out bulk in boxcars, just piled on the floor.

Bob, try doing a search on Wallace Idaho .Its historical information will give you a ton of information on Silvermining.Perhaps you can dig up some ore car photo's even.
Wallace Idaho is such a cool little town and so steeped in silver mining history, it wouldnt surprise me to see you move your entire layout just over the border ![]() The entire town is listed in the national register of historic places. Not just a building or 2,the whole town!!! |

Thanks, Tileguy... I just checked out some of the Wallace links, and you are right, there's a lot of good info there.
Thanks again... Bob |
