Default RJRs G scale garden railway on the cheap

Been pondering for a while but with planning permission from the domestic authorities purchase of stock has begun.

The first item of RJR rolling stock has been collected from Halifax this morning and I have to say i am VERY IMPRESSED !!

On close inspection of the RCE Playmobile train it is very robust and suprisingly good quality.

Here it is hooked up to the container wagon I had made previously (Playmobil and LGB couplers fit each other )

A side view

My biggest worry was track but looking at the playmobile stuff I think it is pretty good, pre-ballasted LGB wheels run on it fine. I now plan to search ebay for some more. I will probably spray it brown and paint the rails before laying in the garden.

As is

As for the loco it runs great lots of weight and pulling power, I will sit and look at it before making any changes, although with a roof some details and a repaint it could look a lot less toy like.

All the different trains and scales I have had, my 13 year old boy has never been interested, put this in the living room and Im wondering if I will get it back !!!! Although you will see on the video his feet as he goes out of shot so his friends wont see him playing trains on YouTube>

and the best bit is it was only 20 for the set still boxed !

Hi John, I look forward to is project i to have a 13 year old thats more interested in football than trains .I had trains when i was young so when my son came along i had an excuse to buy him train sets, which he was quite happy playing with until about 10 just on a plain board.Ive also watched the series on sky called garden railway and was surprised how popular it is in the UK. But no arguing with the other half on how much of the garden you are allowed!!! Good luck with this idea and seeing your previos projects you wont disapoint us .

Happy digging

Neil

PS post plenty of pics

hi John, looking good. No doubt with your building skills you could knock up a good replacement body for it.

Have you checked out the vid by johnnie2sheds entitled SHHHHH!! Secret testing

It shows the same train pulling several wagons and going at a fair lick on a garden layout.

PIMP MY PLAYMO

Work has started on the first "DMU"

Lots to do still but I think just adding the roof and painting out some of the panoramic front windscreen its starting to look a little more model like ?
