Post Union Loop in Chicago

Hi!

I was wondering if anyone knows a location for the layout of the Union Loop in Chicago. I only have this image from Wikipedia:

Any help is appreciated.

Wow ....

Well I don't think they modeled that particular area, at least not in that detail, but the Chicago Museum of Science and Industry has an HO layout depicting Chicago to Seattle and includes a portion of the downtown Loop.

Might be worth doing searches including terms for that.

Who's going to be the first to make that Junction in HO scale then?

I think we have a definite candidate for using the prototype's third rail electrification there. It may simplify (a bit) the job because all the running rails can then be bonded and train control sections limited to the contact rail but that's still a nightmare track job.

We'll get your straight jacket and rubber room warmed up for when you go unstable.

I've often thought it might be fun to model some of the mass transit systems in the towns I've been to or lived in but nothing ever so complex as that interchange.

Ha ha, I don't know why I'm so intrigued by this but I'm researching it at work (shhh!)

Very cool stuff, neat history.

Why when I look at that pic do I think of spaghetti ????

That would be a nightmare to build in "N" scale and I agree that you would probably need the rubber room and some serious therapy after you had done it, probably before. Do'h

If you ever manage it promise to post pics for us to marvel at.

Doug.

I promise :-)
And I will do it. Maybe you are right, N is too small, but then in HO scale at least. If I get something in my head, I will do it no matter what

Here are some images from Google Earth:

NW-Corner of the loop:

SE-Corner of the loop:

If I'm not mistaken, the most complicated parts are the NW and SE corners. The rest is basically straight with some crossovers.
