AMR - Layouts for the HOME

Layout Planning Competition 2007


I would like to announce the start of a Layout-Planning competition for 2007

All Entries are required to be submitted by May 5th, 2007 and will be peer-judged on this forum.

All entrees are required to be:
  • CAD-drawn with a grid in the background OR;
  • Neatly drawn to scale on grid paper
  • Have a relevent name/title
  • Include brief notes/suggestions as to prototype
  • Include brief notes/suggestions for suitable locomotives and rolling stock
  • Must be posted up onto this forum as either a GIF or JPG image file.

Individuals will be limited to 3 entrees in any one category and 5 entrees overall.


There will be the following categories:

Micro-Layouts
  • Layouts which may be equal to or less than the eqivilent of 4' x 1'
  • 4' x 1' = 576 square inches = 3,716 square centimetres.
  • This area must include non-scenic sections
  • This area DOES NOT include control panel(s)/equipment.
  • No section of the layout plan can be less than 3 inches (7.6 cm) wide.

Small Layouts
  • Layouts which may be equal to or less than the eqivilent of 6' x 4'
  • 6' x 4' = 3,456 square inches = 22,297 square centimetres.
  • This area must include non-scenic sections
  • This area DOES NOT include control panel(s)/equipment.
  • No section of the layout plan can be less than 6 inches (15.2 cm) wide.
  • This layout must be designed to be able to be housed in a household bedroom (12' x 12' maximum)

Medium Layouts
  • Layouts which may be equal to or less than the eqivilent of 8' x 4'
  • 8' x 4' = 4,608 square inches = 29,729 square centimetres.
  • This area DOES NOT include control panel(s)/equipment.
  • This area must include non-scenic sections
  • No section of the layout plan can be less than 8 inches (20.3 cm) wide.
  • This layout must be designed to be able to be housed in either a household bedroom (12' x 12' maximum) or into a household single garage (20' x 10' maximum)

Large Layouts
  • Layouts which may be equal to or less than the eqivilent of 16' x 6'
  • 16' x 6' = 13,824 square inches = 89,187 square centimetres.
  • This area must include non-scenic sections
  • This area DOES include control panel(s)/equipment.
  • No section of the layout plan can be less than 12 inches (30.5 cm) wide.
  • This plan must be designed to be able to be housed in either a household single garage (20' x 10' maximum) OR; double garage (20' x 20' maximum)

Here is a trackplan I did some years ago and built the layout, it was called Buffalo Ridge and was also published in Model railroading magazine some years back.
Size was 13'x11' approx.
It was HO scale and mostly ran heavy freight and passenger. Locos were in the region of GP38/RS3/SD's/ and SW1's..

Locale was around the 50's up-over..
