Default Pssst, hey mister, wanna see an On30 shay do 12 inches????? LOL

I tried out my new On30 Bachman shay. I measure my radii from the inner rail and not from the center as most do.
Anyhow, the boxcar and caboose are HO though. I will have to use slightly longer couplers for On30 cars because they are wider. Other than that everything went very very well.
It derailed on a 10 inch [inner rail radius] curve though.
And as usual bigger pics on my website for those who like details.

Damn that's tight! I am planning a minimum curve on my 00 scale layout of 45" with 60" the preferred. Had to order some of those Peco tracksetta templates to ensure I don't inadvertantly come in under the minimum and hit say 30" by mistake and here are you guys bragging over how tight you can get your curves - SWEET

Well remember that's with HO cars too. With the wider On30 cars you will need longer couplers.
Just a heads up.

wickman The 2-8-0 's need 22 inches if I remember rightly. But maybe someone else can confirm that. Was just something I read in a magazine so who knows LOL.

Looks like your having fun

The leaflet in the Bmann 2-8-0 box says 22"min raduius recommended - but reality is 18" with ease, and sqeal round 15" slowly if they must. at least both mine will. They look a bit silly doing it 'cos of the huge overhang. I have 21" radius min on "mainline" - not exactly a gentle curve either.
My BLI C16s will do same.

SimonC lots of fun for now. modified my layout just a tad. Making a coupld of curves 15 inches to allow more space between some tracks. I will still have one curve at 12.5 inches so that only the porter can do it. Although the shay could do it, it would look bad as you stated.
I am hoping a friend comes over this weekend so I can get the wood for the benchwork started.
That will help a lot.
