Default The ON30 Shay that went to Europe. :o

I am posting this because it may inspire some European ON30 forestry railway modellers to include a shay!

The following is a letter in the Railway Magazine October 2005, from Jim Ballantyne of England. It followed on from an article in the Railway Magazine September 2005 about a standard gauge shay that worked in an English steel works.

Lima 2504 was sent to the Krauss loco building company of Linz, Austria, for demonstration purposes circa 1912. It was a 760mm gauge, 50 horsepower, two truck two cylinder loco, and was almost certainly intended for use on one of the many forestry railways that then existed in the Austro-Hungarian Empire.

It was tried out initially on the Salzkammergut Lokalbahn but did not meet with approval. Subsequently it was offered to the Cisna-Kalnica railway (now in Poland) and also the Steyrtalbahn without success.

It remained on the hands of Krauss until 1917 when it was sent to a quarrying company in Torda (nowadays Turda), in Romania, thereafter nothing is known of its ultimate fate. “Maybe it is still in existence in a remote shed in some Transylvanian fastness?” This information is taken from Tren magazine, a Romanian language journal now sadly defunct. web site has this information: Locomotive Works Photo Credit: No Photo At This Time Shop Number 2504 - Built for: Karl Petrachek Built: 03-20-1912 Class: A 18-2 Trucks: 2 Cylinders: [# Diam x Stroke] 2 - 7 x 12. The 2504 at 18 US tons (36000 pounds, 16 tonnes) may be a larger model than the Bachmann shay, but that’s not so vital. web site also shows a photo link for 2504 but this is an inputting error and the link is to 2505
