I understand what you are saying, Bob. In my case, I use the manual setting in my Powershot, but I also use the auto-focus feature. I hold the camera, aim it at something near the back of the engine, or an object nearby until the camera acknowledges it by bracketing it with the focus indicator, and holding the shutter release button down halfway, I set the camera down and depress the button fully. I use a 10 second delay so that the camera can settle on the bag of fine ground foam that I often use as a prop.
I get good results in a 3/4 frontage type view by focusing near the back of the engine and using FastStone to sharpen the image completely. Here is a photo that I have fiddled with in FastStone. The camera would have been about 60 cm (23") from the locomotive, with the close sand tower and shack on which it rests being maybe 30 cm (10") away. The far sky on the wall and closer hills are three full meters away, or about 10'. ![]() -Crandell |

John - I still think your problem is hosting your photos here on AMR. I really recommend you use Photobucket.

You need to remove "thum_" in the URL. But as was noted before in another thread, now it's too big!

It looks about right to me. That is, I don't have to scroll horizontally to see the whole thing (like the one I "fixed" for you).
